British Heritage: Traces of the Colonial Footprint

Overview

Between the mid-19th century and 1947, British colonial rule shaped much of the subcontinent’s built environment. During this period, various civic and institutional buildings were constructed. Saad Zahid has conducted in-depth documentation of colonial-era structures including museums, GPOs, town halls, clock towers, and railway stations throughout Pakistan. His academic focus has been Lahore’s historic Mall Road. Found in major urban areas across Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, these buildings reflect the colonial agenda of control and modernization and remain physical remnants of that complex era.
